Endurance Run Crew
Over the weekend, my friend ran the Cascade Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run. He ran 100 miles! It took him just over 27 hours and I was there at the start, end, and a few of the aid stops in the middle. This is a great accomplishment for him and I was glad I was there to witness it. Below are some of the pictures his wife and I took. 10 am Saturday morning at the start. A few hours later at mile 32...

Redmond Great Day Of Play 5k
The Redmond Great Day of Play 5k was last Friday. I didn’t get my goal, but I still managed to get a new PR. My new 5k PR now is 23:18 (7:31 pace). I came 13th overall, 10th male and #1 in my age group. I somehow won my age group! With the win, I ended up getting some nice things courtesy of REI. The sub 7:00 pace will have to wait until another time.

I’m planning to PR my 5k next week. My current PR is 23:41, a 7:38 pace. My initial goal is to break 23:00 and run a 7:23 pace, but my top goal is to run a 21:41, a 6:59 pace. A lot of painful interval training in the last couple months will be tested next week.

Fatigue
I can’t tell if I’ve over-trained or just tired from the weird sleeping hours I’ve had the last few days to watch the Olympics.

Ragnar Relay 2012
So I ran Ragnar Relay again this year. This is the 2nd time I’ve done the event and I did the Seattle one once again. They added 10 extra miles to the course this year. There were two runners in the group that ran over 20 miles total - even split up into three legs, that is not easy.  Lucky for me, my legs only totaled 15.4 miles. Here is a quick recap of the relay; Ragnar Northwest...

Hiking is out. A little hung over from last night, so going to watch some Olympic coverage and hydrate. Day is early, so afternoon activity is still a go.

Seattle Rock n' Roll Marathon 2012
Seattle Rock n’ Roll Marathon 2012 pace chart. The goal of 4:30 didn’t quite happen, but still a PR. Some of the later pace is off since I was going through tunnels - I did not run a 8:08 for mile 22, more like 24:00+ for mile 21 & 22. I was trying to slow myself down on the first half, but seeing that my heart rate was consistently at 150, I knew I should be ok. The lactose...

Geeking out with my Garmin. Currently on connect.garmin.com looking at my last few runs. Not too shabby. My milage for the last two weeks (22 & 28 mi) is nothing like it was last month, but I am trying to give my body a chance to rest. With the miles I am running, I am more  thoughtful of my heart rate. I’m trying to make sure I’m hitting the right percentage or zone on certain...

Visiting Boston this weekend. I guess I’ll take some time out of my day to watch some little known local footrace.
Apr 11th
Yesterday was the warmest day of the year in Seattle so far this year at 62 degrees. It was supposed to be a rest day, but I couldn’t waste a sunny Seattle. I decided to go for my second bike ride of the year. I kept it short since I haven’t riden my bike consistently since last summer. I ended up riding 30 minutes one direction and then riding back home. Nothing too excruciating, just...

14 miles, nice and slow
Ran 14 miles on Saturday. Still trying to stay within the proper heart range for a long run which seems low. The range for a long run is 121-139. I was 138-139 for most of the run. I had to force myself to really slow down. It felt really slow for me. I’m a little hesitant on trying such a slow pace again, but I really want to try to heart rate training some more. Besides being slow, I had...

Heart Monitor Training
Time to give this heart rate monitor training another go. I ran for 4.75 miles on Thursday. About 3 miles of it was supposed to be at a tempo pace. According to several sites, my heart rate should be at 161+ bpm at a tempo pace. I was just below that for most of the tempo session at around 159 bpm. I hope to get much faster for my next race and hopefully using my heart rate monitor will help me...

Just a quick run today. Just over 3 miles and body felt ok. I’m uncertain if ok feeling is because I haven’t given my body enough time to recover or I let too my body recover too much. It was ten days ago since I did my ultra and it dad time the only real activity I’ve done is go for an hour long bike ride.  I’m planning to do another short easy run tomorrow and hopefully...

Marathon Planning
Trying to plan out my workouts for my the Seattle Rock N Roll in June and I feel like I may be taking it too easy for myself. I currently have 2 build weeks and then an easy week rotation. 2-1-2-1, etc. The distance shouldn’t be a problem since I did just finish an ultra. I definitely want to greatly improve on my time. I looked over the course profile for the marathon and I am certain I...

Chuckanut 50k
The Chuckanut 50k was last Saturday. I knew this was going to be a tough run, but I felt strong and ready.  A quick intro to the race, it is a 50k run located just north of Seattle on the trails around Chuckanut Mtn. Below is the course profile. I studied this profile before the race and I knew that I would need to hike in at least three parts. These parts were the climb on the beginning of the...

Ultra #2
I tried to run 31 miles last Saturday. Things didn’t turn out as well as I’d plan. As much as I want to think about where things went wrong, on the run or in training, I’d rather just move forward and focus on my next race in June. Bah! Who am I kidding, I’m sure I’ll spend too much time thinking about the little things that I have no control of anymore. Quick...

At the Chiropractor
A small conversation I had that made me remember that running so much is not the norm. Me: My back feels a little off since my run last weekend. Chiropractor: Oh, what kind of run was it? A long run? M: Yup C: So, like 2… 3 miles? M: Umm, 3 hours. C: Oh. I got my neck and back adjusted. Spine feels all weird now, but I’m going to skip out on the run tonight to let my spine...

Chuckanut 50k
I just signed up for my 2nd ultra - Chuckanut 50k. Registrations opened this morning and the 500 spots filled up in 1 hr and 15 minutes. Amazing! Kind of crazy too, since the race is only 10 weeks away. So everyone that signed up has already been training - none of this, I’ll sign up and then train later, NO, start running and if you are not broken by registration, then you can sign up. ...

Spring Trail Races
I’m currently trying to find a trail race to do in the spring. I actually found one that was really interesting, but I decided to sleep on it. The next day, after thinking over logistics - travel time, will I need a hotel, what food to bring etc, the race was sold out. That is the unfortunate side of trail races, most are pretty small.  For now, I am looking at three races, two marathons...

PR in the 1/2 Marathon
This morning I participated in the Seattle Ghost 1/2 Marathon and managed to achieve a new PR. From start to finished, I ran the 13.1 miles in 2:00:22, a 9:11 pace. Normally I would be ecstatic with the PR, but I had my heart set on breaking 2 hrs and as you can see I missed it by 23 seconds. If my pace was just 2 seconds faster I would have been able to get that. I was just so close.  I’ve...

Running with Chrissie Wellington
Me with Chrissie. 4-time Kona Ironman winner Chrissie Wellington was in Seattle and she hosted a fun run around Greenlake earlier this morning. My friend John and I decided to join in. Being the elitist runners that we are (ha!) we ran the 2+ miles to the lake from his house and met up with the group there. After a brief talk and some pics for Brooks running, we ran around the lake. There was a...
